Happy 2009!

We're still alive (so far). The past couple of months have been very demanding to say the least(what with my new job, toxic as hell, tip : don't work for a company in a hypermoving industry; and I♥ is still out of the country.)

Anyway, in an attempt to make a proper last post for 2008 (haha)here are some things that should make 2009 exciting.

1. Confessions of a Shopaholic
This will be 2009's answer to The Devil Wears Prada. I'm not alone in saying that this book is a lot more hilarious than TDWP. Trust me. I read it in 2004 - and to this day- I blame Sophie Kinsella for validating my love for excessive shopping (and chick lit)!

credit pic to: http://www.imdb.com

2. H&M in Manila
I'm not saying it's going to happen (just speculating like everyone else) - with the Global Recession and all - but if one can bring Hermes to the Philippines...certainly a girl can hope.

3. Britney in Manila
There I said it. I'm a Britney Post-JT fan. This is embarrassing, but hey this is our Blog. Haha. Again, this is just wishful thinking.

4. Global City, Taguig
The rise of this new business district has been meteoric! Less than a decade ago, this zip code was just a vast piece of land with Pier 1 (and the old MTV HQ) as its lone happening (?!) haunt. Then came Serendra, Embassy, Krispy Kremes (ha), Ascend, Cav, Barcino, Basilio's and so on. Major constructions are going on (hotels!) so we can definitely expect a lot more. Now if only we can extend MRT..

5. The US Inauguration and The 2010 Philippine Presidential Election
I'm not an Obama fan, but it's certainly exciting to see if he can live up to the hype. More importantly, what will Michelle's wardrobe be like ..I kid!
As for us locals, well, are you ready to see the impending drama/circus pre-election? This should be better then The Hills.

Flick Pick: Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

Remember Bleeker from Juno? He's back!! From the book Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, here comes the movie version starring Michael Cera (aka Bleeker my Love :D) and Kat Dennings. I haven't read the book (M♥ did...she said it was a good book and she'll probabaly do a review soon. yey!). But I'm expecting a good movie version.

BTW, just a tip for all you dying to get a hold of the book, it's OUT of STOCK at the moment so don't waste your time going to Powerbooks or Fully Booked. It's only available at  SM San Lazaro National Bookstore. Ssshhh...hush popshionistas! It's a top secret. :D

It's Michael Cera and the movie soundtrack...that's all I need to know! :D

River Flows In You by Yiruma - Edward's Lullaby to Bella

First time I heard this song, my world literally turned upside down. I was dumbfounded...it was sooo pretty! I can't help but put it on repeat mode. Playing it once was never enough...only to find out that it's Edward's lullaby to Bella on the movie version of Twilight. It's the perfect song! I swear! Thanks to Yiruma, a South Korean pianist who originally composed and played the song.

The song doesn't have lyrics but it will haunt your soul with the harmony of each note. It's intense! It's brilliant!

Blair Waldorf...singing?

I was totally surprised! I never knew that B can hit a note much more launch an album. Yes, she's planning to launch an album! See movie clip above so you'll know what I'm talking about.

Apparently, Miss Waldorf got a gig on the movie Drive Thru. Hot or Not? You be the judge. But personally, I think she has no hand and body coordination...I can immediately tell that she doesn't know how to play the guitar. Or am I wrong?

Owel, her singing voice is a 360 turn from her Upper East side voice. Who would've thought that she wanted to be a rockstar?

If you want more, check this out. I like this one. Her own house/pop/disco (not sure on the genre) version of Bette Davis Eyes.

Tales of Popshionista Anxiety Attacks

Google-d Definition

anxious - (angk'shus, ang'shus)

  1. Uneasy and apprehensive about an uncertain event or matter; worried.
  2. Attended with, showing, or causing anxiety: spent an anxious night waiting for the test results.
Popshionista-speak

anxSHOES*- (angk'shus)
  1. Uneasy and apprehensive about a certain pair of shoes
  2. Attended with, showing, or causing anxiety: spent an anxious day salivating over your friend's shoes. See Image below**
* credits to J♥ who originally coined the term. Enjoy India dear!
** OK. My colleague just got back from a 2-month business trip to London. Like a true shoe-natic, she skipped eating altogether, and devoted her time and GBPs to shopping!
She bought around 8 pairs, that's like a pair for every week she spent in UK. Wow! Drooling. Now that's what I call real business! Anyway, pictured above is one of the many sources of my shoe anxiety.. I'm so anxshoes all morning I had to take a picture of it using my phone's cam!

Beverly Hills 90210 pilot episode

No advance screening for media people? Great marketing strategy for the newest residents of the zip! And what better way to kickoff the season but to air a back-to-back 2 hour premiere!

I must say, this drama is pretty interesting! Being a follower of the old school drama makes me want to see what's in store for the 2008 version.

  • The kids may not be as fasyon as Blair Waldorf and Chuck Bass but they have an impact. Think of Charlize Theron in a teen drama! And I mean it literally because Naomi (second to the left on the photo) really looks like Charlize! By the way, these kids are ONLY 15-16 years old!
  • The pit isn't all about the burgers anymore!
  • Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth appearances... +++ audience impact. No logical explanation needed. Viva vintage zip residents..hello?
  • There's this one character (Ty)...he's 15-16 yrs old I think...he portrays a rich guy. Yeah I get it, what kind of teenager owns a private jet and takes his friend to grab a bite in SanFo? Kids these days!
  • The show's soundtrack is great! Viva La Vida opening song..nice!
Click click for more. :p

Just to refresh your memories, here's a photo of the old school Beverly Hills 90210.

Look at those printed polos, that HUGE red blazers (am I even seeing shoulder pads? haha), and that mommy pants! What can I say, Brenda is always timeless! Go team Brenda! :D

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

It was only recently that I discovered the benefits (and costs) of creating an Amazon.com account. Immediately after getting one I was typing like a madwoman trying to find my very first online purchase! * Well, I've been trying to get a copy of this book for years- not because of its critical merits, nor due to the mixed buzz it got - but simply because I liked the book's title (and the things it implied)! Strangely, I couldn't find one here in Manila. I found the perfect candidate! In no time I was $30 poorer. The book was on my doorstep two weeks after.

Anyway here are my thoughts:
- Toby Young is a complete m_ron. I completely agree with some points that he raised, so I wont be surprised if occasionally I appear like a m_ron as well!Haha

- He had an interesting take and references to democracy and meritocracy,
but he dwelled too much on these two the book was borderline boring! And I thought this was light reading!

- Fortunately there were a number Gossip Girl- worthy accounts to keep me awake(so who's the hyper hyphenated Alex da Silva? clue: former drummer/world class junkie/turned Hollywood screenwriter/dated a supermodel who used to date de Niro!whew). Plus Candace Bushnell (yes of the Sex and the City fame)is a recurring character in the book.**

- I have developed fondness of the English sense of humor- Nick Hornby.Thank.You.Very.Much. So I appreciate Toby's self-deprecating ways.

- He sure had a mouthful to say about New York, America, and the Great American Dream. I'm surprised this book did not start World War 3 (I kid)

- His Conde Nastie stories will definitely remind you of your own corporate horror stories (office sharks, mermaids, and all, I'm sure you've met at least one of them!)

- Overall, although it sounded like I hated it, I think this book remains as an interesting read.

*Yes I am a complete online shopping novice.
To this day I'm still surprised it actually worked (haha)!
** This is a perfect validation of my unhealthy celebrity and gossip obsession.
$30 - includes the $20 shipping cost

Bacon Alarm Clock anyone?

Tired of those EARitating alarm clock sounds? Those mind shattering snooze alerts?

I feel you.

It's so hard to wake up in the morning! Seriously, it takes a lot of will power to get up early and plan your day ahead. It's a talent...a skill! Thank God I have my ever reliable mom to be my morning alarm clock. And the best thing about it? My alarm clock is not repetitive. Not the same tone each and everyday! It depends if she's in a good or bad mood. *Love you mom! :)*

But...I can't pass on this one. The Wake N' Bacon alarm clock! Instead of hearing those annoying alarm clock sound and snooze alerts, it uses the smell of a cooked bacon to wake you up. Cool heaps! I want one...NOW! Want to know more? Click Click!

by Matty Sallin, Daniel Bartolini, Hsiao-huh Hsu

WHAT: An alarm clock that wakes you up with the smell and sizzle of cooking bacon.

WHY: No one likes to wake up, especially by an alarm. This clock gently wakes you up with the mouthwatering aroma of bacon, just like waking up on a Sunday morning to the smell of Mom cooking breakfast. Unless you're Jewish.

HOW: A frozen strip of bacon is placed in Wake n' Bacon the night before. Because there is a 10 minute cooking time, the clock is set to go off 10 minutes before the desired waking time. Once the alarm goes off, the clock it sends a signal to a small speaker to generate the alarm sound. We hacked the clock so that the signal is re-routed by a microchip that in responds by sending a signal to a relay that throws the switch to power two halogen lamps that slow-cook the bacon in about 10 minutes.

Thanks to J for introducing me to this scientific breakthrough! Hahaha!

Tartans and Checks!

From old school clan representation to present fab! Tartans and checks have come a long loooong way. On your left is John Campbell of the Bank year 1749 and on your right is one of D&G's Autumn/Winter 08 collection. See the similarities?

Tartans are no longer exclusive for Scotland...the trend has invaded every closet (almost?). You may not have noticed it but I bet there's 1 piece in your closet with boxlike patterns. See!

Trivia: Plaid is the term used for Tartan in North America. Owel, Tartan, check or plaid..it doesn't matter. Although it looks uniform-y (St. Paul hs student? hehe)...i still like it. I don't know why.

Here's a glimpse of Topshop's newest collection...i like! :)
And from Mango's fall collection...

Blairbands on your wrist!

With the rise of the Blairbands...here comes the Blairwatch (Not its official name hehe. I just like to call it as such. :P). But outside the corners of the Upper East Side invasion, it's called the Betsey Johnson Bow Watch.

I'm not really a big fan of Blairbands because I think it's too flashy for my age. I'm a corporate slave at 24 and Blairbands will make me look like a Minnie Mouse wannabe while meeting with other ferosh corporate slaves. Therefore, Blairbands...not-an-option! :P But it's cute...when not overdone. Do you feel me M? Haha.

But this Blairwatch, I like. :) Betsey Johnson is an idealist of cuteness. Reminds me of those Sweet 16 days. Haha.

For more Betsey Johnson, check this out.

Macbook Touch...for real?

MacRumors are all over the place...Apple's next big thing...the Macbook TOUCH!

According to MacNewsDaily,

'Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion's haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at "low" price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest.'

I totally dig the concept. But will they compromise the screen size? Considering that they'll embed the keyboard in to the screen...uhmm let's just wait and see...IF it's true.

Sheez...what can Apple not do these days?

Must-see: The Dark Knight

First Batman Movie I ever saw - and I couldn't ask for a better debut!

Amazing Movie.
Amazing Screenplay.
Amazing Shots, finally Gotham City found daylight!

Amazing Cast.
AMAZING CAST!

Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman (nevermind Maggie, kidding).

HEATH LEDGER! If you need more reasons to fear clowns, watch this flick! Haha.
He is Joker. Jack Nicholson WHO?!
I'm not patronizing him (RIP).
He's really good.
He stole the show.

And CHRISTIAN BALE..
That stare..It melts my heart..I love him!
I know he's been around for ages. I use to see him all the time, on the pages of Seventeen/YM back in the mid-90s. He's always the Next Big Thing or The Hottest Bachelor Around, but was never given a break as huge as playing Bruce Wayne. Who stood a chance versus 90's Leo Di Caprio, even the pre-Titanic days, anyway? He is a very good actor(American Psycho)! Very good, hot actor..And that stare..Christian..Look at me..Choose me..Haha.

If you have a chance, go see it in IMAX. Nice aerial shots!

Go. Go. GO!

(Note 20/07/2008: Since I'm officially a Balehead - and this close to starting a fansite, haha- I did a little research. Turned out, although he was the first choice to play American Psycho, he did lost it to Leo for a while! Luckily he won it back!)

And so we meet again...CHOTOS mi love!

Yes that's mi love...mi CHOTOS! :) We've been apart for so long (11 months, 10 days and 13 hours), enough to make me go berserk when I found out that we can be together again!

I can just remember that one sweet Singapore afternoon. Everything was so perfect. I found my love! Yet it wasn't too long when the taste went away. Sorrow.

But just a few hours ago...thank God for New Hatchin Japanese grocery store...we were reunited! :D

I'm so happy that I called the store in advance to check for its availability and price! It is demand and supply baby! It's time to hoard and fall in love again with a stash of Chotos! You can't go wrong! :P

TOPSHOP private sale!

Just got my invitation to Topshop's annual private sale this coming August 1. The invite is sooo cute! Really looks like a passport! weee! :D

Click click to see what's inside!

When: August 1, 2008 (Friday)
Time: 12NN to 9PM
Where: Topshop / Topman / Dorothy Perkins outlets here in the Philippines
Details: Up to 50% off on their Spring / Summer 2008 collection and 10% off on their Autumn / Winter 2008 collection

My personal suggestion: If you're with boyfriend or any guy friend, try to visit the SM MOA or Powerplant branches. You can fully utilize your invite with these 2 cuz they have Topshop and Topman...plus DP is just around the corner. It's like hitting 3 birds with one stone. Or should I say, raiding lots and lots of racks with just 1 invite? Haha.

But I think the GB3 branch has a widerange of selection. It's also a good choice. TS at Robinsons Place Midtown wing just opened. That branch may have good selections as well. And oh, you can't miss those lovely pieces at the Bonifacio High Street branch!

Sheez. So hard to decide where to go.

Must-Read: Chasing Harry Winston

We have to break the silence here.

Sorry, work's hell.

I've been wanting to read this for a month now. Two weekends ago, I finally got the chance to curl up on my bed and indulge in some socially-relevant literature (Financial Times,Wall Street, chick lit...). Haha
From the writer of The Devil Wears Prada and Everyone Worth Knowing, this book doesn't disappoint -especially for the ladies around my age (M here), when the invisible race to the altar (or the climb up the corporate ladder) is ironically hard to miss. Hahaha

Anyway, I don't think you need any convincing.
Afterall, a tired, tired working girl can't read too many chick lits!

Jay Z's version of Wonderwall @ Glastonbury Festival 2008

I just wish JayZ didn't make a version of this song. :( His rap skills are great...but singing Wonderwall? Of all songs! Why did he do that? He wasn't even singing...I thought he was...rapping? He could've just proceed with '99 problems' without doing a Wonderwall cover. That could've been better. I listened to it once. Maybe it hasn't sinked in to me yet? No.

Noel Gallagher even said that 'JayZ is wrong for Glasto'.

Owel.

Livin La Vida LOLA Leon!

Madonna's Mini-me is making a fashion buzz at a tender age of 11!

Sidenote: Can you remember what was your fashion statement at that age? Mine? I don't wanna remember! It's a nightmare! I swear it's giving me the creeps! That hiphop shorts (more like of a puruntong)! I don't know what it's even called for crying out loud! It's like a 3/4 baggy shorts and I matched it with a matching super big white shirt. Let's do the harlem baby! Hahah! Ewwwness at a maximum level! I remember how me and my brother share the same clothes. Expect the worst! We're not necessarily fashion forward sibs. I even thought I was a bisexual back then. And my hair...gawd that hair was terrible! Nuff of this old school reminiscing, it makes me wanna vomit. But if you want to share those old school fashion disaster...just drop us a comment. :)

Now back to our litte Lola. I'm surprised how an 11 year old can pull off a ferosh look. Maybe she's Madonna's Little-Miss-Like-A-Virgin in the making that's why she has the license to look absolutely fierce compared to other 11 year old girls who's still figuring out how to work that leggings without even trying so hard.

She has that rockstar-popstar vibe going on! 80's meets grunge kind of thing. Blame it to actor-with-grunge-style dad Carlos Leon and popstar mom Madonna!

Flick Pick: August Rush

I know this is a one-year-late-recommendation but screw that one year! This movie is a MUST-SEE! I had the OST for quite sometime though I haven't seen the movie. Thanks to my officemate who share the same passion for music, I was intrigued by the OST. I kept playing it over and over again and that's when I decided to buy the DVD.

If you're up for the romance and the music (like me hihi :p) this movie can make it to your top 5 list. I bet! Although the ending is a little unfinished it still is a movie worth your time. The writer probably thought of giving our brains a little exercise. Imagination people! haha.

Plus, the cast is great! Keri Russell (Lyla Novacek)! Do you remember Felicity? I do. I used to watch that when Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and the OC are not yet even conceptualized. Felicity was my Thursday night fix (Channel 9 baby! haha). And Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Louis Connelly), don't you love a guitarist/vocalist with an Irish accent? Who wouldn't fall head over heels for that guy? A rockstar with an Irish accent (I told you I'm into rockstars)! Although not your typical beautiful guy, his ruggedness is to die for. Oh, and the little boy, the child prodigy of music, Freddie Highmore (August Rush)...he's going to be the next Haley Joel Osment! Not only do they look the same but they are both good child actors!

And...the MUSIC! it'll make you go berserk just thinking about it!

Go watch it NOW! Maybe I'm exaggerating...but I'm not. I just looooooooove the movie that much! Ipod playlist updated...it now includes some classical. Mozart goodness! :)

A breath of fresh air in this time where superheroes, violence, sex, aliens and robots sell!

To be able to sprint from Ayala/Paseo de Roxas to Greenbelt (and back) wearing a 4-inch pumps - braving the sizeable Makati lunch hour crowd- is a gift.

I hate to say this but Kate Middleton...

is this close to becoming a royalty (and a future queen, hmmp).

She recently witnessed her boyfriend Prince William being invested in the Order of the Garter, the world's oldest surviving chivalry, at Windsor Castle.

Her boyfriend was knighted ladies. Lucky girl! You know how hard it is to find a knight these days (chuckles). Do you have a girlfriend dating (dated) a knight? No, right? I thought so.

Anyway, I remember having this massive crush on William (William????) back in '97 or '98. Around that time, girls my age were collecting posters of Nick Carter (yes, I am referring to you, Y) or cutting out pics of Leo.

But not me.

I never wanted to be a boy band groupie. My fantasies involved Kensington Palace, a scepter, and a tiara. So I collected pictures of the future King.

Fast-forward to now, Prince William has clearly chosen a suitable Queen.

I get it. No hard feelings. Especially now, when we have much hotter royalties.

Harry.. Andrea Casigrahi.. Sigh..

PopTech: Voodoo Envy 133

Skinny is sexy! I thought this only pertains to the human body...not anymore! It's the battle for the skinniest laptop! Crazy isnt it? After the release of Macbook Air, here comes a skinnier laptop at 0.7 inches (the Macbook Air is 0.76 inches thick). See how that 0.06 inches made the difference?

Voodoo Envy 133

This photo didn't actually do the Voodoo Envy 133 justice. Click click for the video. You'll be surprised!

And can I just say that the finishing is so hot? It's carbon fiber! Like the black car hoods you see.
Cool!

Great features include:
  • Weighs less than 3.4 pounds.
  • Wears a carbon fiber casing with custom microweave design
  • Features a 13.3-inch backlit LED display
  • Integrated 802.11 ABGN Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, USB and HDMI ports
  • With built-in webcam, and a multiple gesture touchpad.
  • Available in black or white but can also be customized with Voodoo Allure paint finishes
  • Sporting a 65-nn processor
  • Uses an 'off roadmap chip' of Intel design which consumes 20 watts of power
  • With a processor running at either 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz with 4MB L2 Cache and 800MHz FSB.
  • Has a removable battery
  • Has an IOS which launches an environment which enables users to surf the net and make Skype calls within a mere 10 seconds. Saves time. Saves battery life.
Basically, it's a Macbook Air ++ only more anorexic! haha.
