It was only recently that I discovered the benefits (and costs) of creating an Amazon.com account. Immediately after getting one I was typing like a madwoman trying to find my very first online purchase! * Well, I've been trying to get a copy of this book for years- not because of its critical merits, nor due to the mixed buzz it got - but simply because I liked the book's title (and the things it implied)! Strangely, I couldn't find one here in Manila. I found the perfect candidate! In no time I was $30 poorer. The book was on my doorstep two weeks after.
Anyway here are my thoughts:
- Toby Young is a complete m_ron. I completely agree with some points that he raised, so I wont be surprised if occasionally I appear like a m_ron as well!Haha
- He had an interesting take and references to democracy and meritocracy, but he dwelled too much on these two the book was borderline boring! And I thought this was light reading!
- Fortunately there were a number Gossip Girl- worthy accounts to keep me awake(so who's the hyper hyphenated Alex da Silva? clue: former drummer/world class junkie/turned Hollywood screenwriter/dated a supermodel who used to date de Niro!whew). Plus Candace Bushnell (yes of the Sex and the City fame)is a recurring character in the book.**
- I have developed fondness of the English sense of humor- Nick Hornby.Thank.You.Very.Much. So I appreciate Toby's self-deprecating ways.
- He sure had a mouthful to say about New York, America, and the Great American Dream. I'm surprised this book did not start World War 3 (I kid)
- His Conde Nastie stories will definitely remind you of your own corporate horror stories (office sharks, mermaids, and all, I'm sure you've met at least one of them!)
- Overall, although it sounded like I hated it, I think this book remains as an interesting read.
*Yes I am a complete online shopping novice. To this day I'm still surprised it actually worked (haha)!
** This is a perfect validation of my unhealthy celebrity and gossip obsession.
